Kahaan To Tay Thaa Charaaghan Harek Ghar Ke Liye: Ghazal by Dushyant Kumar
Although I am not a ghazal specialist, I have for long wanted to record this ghazal and was finally able to do so because of the generosity and support of several artistes and friends. To each of them Aneesh Pradhan (my husband, fellow musician and partner in all projects) and I would like to to express our thanks and admiration for their magnanimity.
Written by the eminent poet Dushyant Kumar (1933-1975), the ghazal “kahaan to tai thaa charaghaan har ek ghar ke liye” continues to inspire readers decades after it was written. We thank Smt. Rajeshwari Dushyant Kumar, the poet’s wife and Shri Alok Tyagi, the poet’s son, for so generously and open-heartedly permitting us to record the ghazal in response to a hesitant email I wrote to the latter seeking his permission.
My thanks to poet and good friend Aalok Srivastava who so willingly helped us get in touch with Shri Alok Tyagi. Aalok ji also provided inputs regarding pronunciation and diction for which we are grateful to him.
Our thanks also to:
Srijan Mahajan, Arsh Sharma, Nikhil Malik of Studio Fuzz who very kindly recorded the track at their studio;
Dawn Infotainment, Pune where we did some additional recording,
Murad Ali for his wonderful sarangi accompaniment,
Sudhir Nayak for his brilliant harmonium accompaniment
and Nitin Joshi who mixed and mastered the track for us.
Our own roles were as follows:
Composition and voice: Shubha Mudgal
Tabla: Aneesh Pradhan.
This ghazal is said to have been written in response to the state of Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in June 1975. However, the poet’s words ring true in current times too ! Which is why we decided to sing
“about the dark times” “in dark times”.

Your rendition of ‘Kahan to tay thaa..’ is extremely beautiful. I have always adored your voice and here it does complete justice to the words of the poet.
